Introduzione:
L’elettrocardiogramma (ECG) è un esame diagnostico che pre- vede la rilevazione e la contemporanea registrazione dell’attività elettrica del cuore, attraverso un apparecchio specifico che è l’elet- trocardiografo. È uno strumento necessario nella pratica medica. Si basa sul principio dei campi elettrici naturalmente presenti a livello cutaneo e che possono essere amplificati e registrati. Willem Ein- thoven (fisiologo olandese) mise a punto un primo modello per la re- gistrazione dell’ECG, rivedendo alcuni apparecchi già progettati in precedenza. Il suo apparecchio era un galvanometro a corda, ossia un apparecchio composto da un filamento sottile sospeso in un magnete, collegato al paziente con dei sensori (elettrodi). Il filamento poteva oscillare a causa dei campi elettrici generati dall’attività cardiaca. L’oscillazione del filamento fu registrata su carta in movimento per poter visualizzare ciò che prima si poteva solo immaginare. Ad Ein- thoven fu conferito il Nobel per la medicina ai primi del Novecento. Era nato quindi, l’ECG.
